Marine Technical Specialist - Ocean Sciences

About the role

The University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science is seeking a Marine Technical Specialist to support oceanographic research. The role involves designing, procuring, constructing, operating, and maintaining oceanographic instruments and systems, as well as serving as a seagoing technician on research vessels.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate and participate in design, procurement, construction, operation, and maintenance of oceanographic instruments and sensor systems.
• Serve as a seagoing technician on research vessels, conducting field operations and environmental sampling.
• Design and fabricate custom oceanographic instruments and sensor packages.
• Lead deck operations for deployment and recovery of oceanographic moorings.
• Travel domestically and internationally to support research vessel missions.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Marine Biology, Marine Science, Engineering or a closely related field.
• Minimum five years of experience maintaining and operating oceanographic instrumentation.
• Proven experience leading deck operations for mooring deployment and recovery.
• Physical ability to lift, carry, stand, walk, stoop, bend and hear instructions or alarms.

• Mechanical systems maintenance and repair.
• PC‑based applications and electronic equipment interfacing.
• Use of hand tools, power tools, and electronic test equipment.
• Basic electrical wiring, soldering and splicing.
