Electrical Engineer/Designer (Commercial MEP)

About the role

Abstra, a nearshore tech talent services company, is looking for an Electrical Engineer/Designer with at least 2 years of commercial electrical design experience. The role supports the design of power distribution systems, lighting layouts and photometric analysis across a diverse portfolio of commercial buildings. It is 100% remote, with working hours between CST and EST time zones.

Key responsibilities

• Design commercial electrical power distribution systems, including service entrance, panelboards, feeders, branch circuiting and equipment connections.
• Develop interior and exterior lighting layouts and perform photometric calculations to meet design criteria and code requirements.
• Prepare construction documents in AutoCAD and Revit, including plans, details, schedules and one-line diagrams.
• Ensure compliance with the NEC and the IECC, including lighting power density, controls and compliance documentation.
• Coordinate electrical design with mechanical, plumbing, structural and architectural disciplines.
• Support construction administration, including RFI responses and submittal reviews, and assist with permit review comments and code compliance documentation.
• Communicate with project managers, clients and contractors throughout the design process.

Required profile

• 2+ years of experience in commercial electrical systems design.
• Demonstrated experience with power distribution design and lighting layout and photometric calculations.
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to manage multiple project deadlines.

Required skills

• Working knowledge of the NEC and the IECC.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit (electrical design/MEP workflows).
• Preferred: photometric software such as AGi32 or Visual, utility coordination, and experience across retail, multifamily, industrial and healthcare buildings.
