Correctional Officer Trainee – State of Illinois

About the role

The Correctional Officer Trainee program provides up to three months of formalized, on‑the‑job training in security and custodial duties for the Illinois Department of Corrections. Trainees will complete an eight‑week pre‑service security training curriculum and attend a graduation ceremony where they receive certificates, badges, and take the Oath of Office.

Key responsibilities

• Participate in eight weeks of structured security and custodial training at the IDOC Training Academy.
• Perform on‑site security and custodial duties under supervision at Lawrence Correctional Center or other state facilities.
• Maintain physical fitness standards required for screening and daily duties.
• Attend the formal graduation ceremony and receive official certification as a Correctional Officer.

Required profile

• Physically fit and able to meet the screening standards prior to training.
• Authorized to work full‑time in the United States; the State of Illinois does not sponsor visas.
• Bilingual skills are welcome but not required.
• Willingness to work onsite at one of the state correctional facilities.
