Staff Digital Embedded Software Engineer

About the role

Johnson & Johnson is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for its DePuy Synthes Orthopaedics team to design and develop software for electro‑mechanical medical devices. The role can be based in Raynham, MA or Palm Beach Gardens, FL and involves working across multidisciplinary teams to bring innovative, safety‑critical solutions to market.

Key responsibilities

• Lead software architecture, design, development, integration and verification for safety‑critical medical device applications.
• Drive all phases of the software development lifecycle, including requirements, implementation, testing, verification, validation support, release and post‑market support.
• Manage hardware/software integration, board bring‑up, and system‑level problem solving using data‑driven root‑cause analysis.
• Oversee external development partners, ensuring alignment with project objectives, quality and regulatory requirements.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field with 8+ years experience (or equivalent advanced degree with fewer years).
• Strong experience developing embedded software in C/C++ and Python, including bare‑metal, RTOS‑based and embedded Linux systems.
• Demonstrated ability to work in regulated environments (FDA, IEC 62304) and manage risk (ISO 14971).
• Willingness to work in medical environments such as cadaver labs and operating rooms.
