Research Engineer – Optical Connector Portfolio

About the role

Join 3M’s innovative research team focused on the optical connector portfolio. You will work alongside global experts, guiding testing activities and collaborating with manufacturing, marketing, and business teams to deliver high‑impact solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Participate in the research team for 3M’s optical connector portfolio.
• Guide small technician teams to complete requested tests.
• Develop test plans, prepare samples, conduct tests, analyze data, and produce test reports.
• Collaborate with local and division manufacturing teams on projects that improve manufacturing operations.
• Validate technical claims in 3M published literature with supporting test data.
• Engage with customers worldwide alongside marketing and business teams.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or higher (verified before start).
• Minimum three years of optical experience in a private, public, government, or military environment.
• Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Optics, or Electrical Engineering (preferred).
• Five years of technical experience with strong engineering skills (preferred).

Required skills

• Experience with metrology tools such as SEM, AFM, CMM, and confocal microscopes.
• Proficiency with laboratory test equipment.
• Ability to design and build test fixtures.
• Knowledge of industry standards, product qualification testing, fiber optics, and electrical components.
