General Counsel

About the role

The General Counsel leads the legal and governance strategy for the KIPP Foundation and its network of public charter schools. Reporting to the CEO and working closely with the Board, this senior advisor ensures the organization navigates legal, policy, and regulatory matters while supporting its mission to provide high‑quality, tuition‑free education.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement legal strategies aligned with KIPP’s mission and values.
• Advise senior leadership and the Board on regulatory compliance, risk management, and policy issues.
• Oversee all litigation, contract negotiations, and dispute resolution activities.
• Draft, review, and approve contracts, agreements, and governance documents.
• Lead a legal team, providing mentorship and ensuring high‑quality legal services.
• Monitor changes in education law, nonprofit regulations, and related statutes.

Required profile

• Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree from an accredited institution.
• Bar admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• Minimum 10 years of progressive legal experience, including significant litigation exposure.
• Proven experience advising senior executives and boards of nonprofit or education organizations.
• Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and decision‑making abilities.
