Communications Specialist – Police Dispatch

About the role

The Communications Specialist‑4 works in the Georgetown University Law Center Police Communications Center, handling emergency and non‑emergency calls, dispatching police officers, and monitoring safety systems. This full‑time position operates on rotating day, night, weekend and holiday shifts and requires calm, decisive communication under pressure.

Key responsibilities

• Answer emergency telephone lines and prioritize calls based on severity.
• Dispatch police officers and initiate EMS responses.
• Monitor the university fire alarm, CCTV security system, and other alarm systems.
• Provide information and customer service to the university community via phone and walk‑up.
• Train new communications center staff and perform clerical record‑keeping tasks.
• Maintain required APCO certifications and other mandatory trainings.

Required profile

• Licensed Communications Specialist and Dispatcher with ability to remain calm under stress.
• Strong multitasking, resource‑management, and decision‑making skills.
• Ability to work independently or paired with another officer with minimal supervision.
• CPR certification, APCO public‑safety tele‑communicator training, and FEMA Incident Command System (ICS) training.
