Yard Operator

About the role

Gerdau is seeking a motivated and safety‑focused Yard Operator to join its operations team in Jamestown, Minnesota. The role is essential for daily yard operations, handling scrap inspection, material handling, and equipment operation while supporting safety, quality, and environmental standards.

Key responsibilities

• Follow all Gerdau safety, environmental and operational procedures and participate in daily safety meetings.
• Inspect incoming scrap for radiation, quality, and compliance; verify grades and communicate findings.
• Safely operate loaders, material handlers and other mobile equipment to load and unload scrap.
• Perform daily Routine Equipment Care (REC) inspections and document results.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
• Provide excellent customer service and communicate effectively with customers, coworkers, supervisors and scale operators.
• For rail‑enabled locations, shift rail cars, operate locomotives, activate switches, and handle coupling/uncoupling as required.

Required skills

• Operation of loaders, cranes, material handlers or similar heavy equipment.
• Scrap inspection, including radiation scanning and grade verification.
• Knowledge of ferrous and non‑ferrous scrap grading (or willingness to learn).
