Workers Compensation Staff Legal Attorney

About the role

Zurich is seeking a Workers’ Compensation Defense Trial Attorney to join its Chicago Staff Legal office. The attorney will represent the company in all phases of Workers’ Compensation litigation across Illinois, working one day per week on‑site and the remainder remotely.

Key responsibilities

• Represent Zurich in Workers’ Compensation cases from filing through appeals, including pre‑trial investigations, arbitrations, and court hearings.
• Prepare and file pleadings, motions, and other legal documents.
• Conduct legal research using Lexis or Westlaw and provide analysis to claims professionals.
• Collaborate with claims teams to offer legal advice and strategy.
• Handle post‑trial activities such as appeals to the Commission, Circuit Court, or Appellate Courts.

Required profile

• Juris Doctor and at least 5 years of litigation experience.
• Member in good standing of the Illinois State Bar Association.
• Knowledge of insurance industry, claims, and insurance defense litigation.
• Strong communication, negotiation, and problem‑solving abilities.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Experience using Adobe software.
• Research skills with Lexis or Westlaw platforms.
