Volunteer Firefighter

About the role

The Aspen Fire Protection District is recruiting a Volunteer Firefighter. Volunteers serve for civic, charitable and humanitarian reasons and report administratively to the Volunteer Representative and operationally to the Battalion Chief, Lieutenant or senior firefighter. There is no salary, but volunteers in good standing may receive benefits such as health insurance, a fitness wellness benefit and retirement benefits.

Key responsibilities

• Provide interior and exterior fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical response and public education, and operate fire apparatus and equipment
• Respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents, including search and rescue and emergency medical and first aid services
• Drive fire apparatus and emergency vehicles, including ambulances, to incident scenes
• Maintain, repair and keep fire and rescue equipment and facilities in constant readiness
• Take part in fire prevention programs, training and response to natural disasters, hazardous materials incidents and major accidents
• Assist transporting patients, evaluate their condition and treat them in line with EMT training
• Study street layouts and building plans, give tours of district facilities and run public education programs
• Help with snow and ice removal, write incident reports and use department computers and radios

Required profile

• Ability to drive and operate fire and rescue equipment
• Able to sit for several hours and lift up to 100 pounds regularly, occasionally up to 180 pounds
• Good vision and hearing, able to read documents at night and in smoke, and to distinguish colours
• Knowledge of fire suppression, basic life support, hazardous materials response and local laws and codes
