Vocational ESL Intern – Community Education

About the role

The Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) Intern will support the International Rescue Committee’s community‑based VESL program in Salt Lake City. Working with adult learners of diverse backgrounds and varying English proficiency, the intern helps students gain the literacy and language skills needed for everyday life in the United States.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the VESL instructor during classes held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
• Set up classroom materials, make copies, and prepare learning resources.
• Answer client questions about language, culture, and program logistics.
• Support classroom activities and facilitate student participation.
• Enter data into the program’s tracking system and maintain accurate records.
• Administer placement assessments during student registration appointments.

Required profile

• Enthusiastic about working with refugee and immigrant adult learners.
• Strong interest in education, social services, or humanitarian work.
• Ability to manage a classroom environment with students of varied literacy levels.
• Willingness to learn about barriers to education for refugee populations.

Required skills

• Data entry and basic computer proficiency.
