Veterinary Technician – Large Animal (Level 1, 2 or 3)

About the role

The Large Animal Hospital at LSU provides 24/7 patient care and seeks experienced Veterinary Technicians to support faculty clinicians, house officers, and veterinary students. The role involves hands‑on technical support for emergency, critical care, surgery, internal medicine, and food‑animal services.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with day‑to‑day operations, including patient handling, restraint, monitoring, assessments, and treatment administration across all hospital units.
• Prepare and maintain examination and treatment areas, load/unload and transfer equine patients, and ensure bio‑security and infection‑prevention protocols are followed.
• Support client communication, maintain accurate medical records, and track charges for inpatient and outpatient services.
• Teach and mentor veterinary students and new staff on proper techniques, bio‑security, and equipment use.
• Participate in holiday, weekend, and on‑call emergency coverage as required.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or associate's degree in veterinary technology.
• Active registration with the Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Registered Veterinary Technician.
• Extensive experience in safe handling and restraint of horses and livestock.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision while adhering to hospital policies and safety procedures.

Required skills

• Animal handling and restraint techniques for large animals.
• Use of ultrasonography, endoscopes, ECG equipment, and oxygen tanks.
• Blood collection, transfusion, and intravenous catheter placement.
• Clinical procedures such as bandaging, joint injections, and sample collection.
• Maintenance and cleaning of technical veterinary equipment.
