Underwater Sonar Specialist

About the role

Prudent Engineering is seeking an Underwater Sonar Specialist to join its hydrographic services team. The specialist will acquire high‑quality 3D bathymetry and underwater imagery, install and troubleshoot sonar and sensor systems, and support data processing for infrastructure projects across New York and Pennsylvania.

Key responsibilities

• Acquire hydrographic data including 3D bathymetry, 2D underwater imagery, vessel‑mounted LiDAR, sub‑bottom profiling, magnetometer, and current profiling data.
• Install, troubleshoot, and operate sonar and other sensor systems on survey vessels, ROVs, and USVs.
• Collaborate with team members to ensure safe, compliant equipment use and accurate survey results.
• Maintain detailed field notes, documentation, and assist in preparing deliverables for clients.

Required profile

• Demonstrated ability in remote sensing techniques and understanding of geodesy and underwater acoustic principles.
• Effective technical writing and communication skills; capable of independent decision‑making and problem‑solving.
• Legal right to work in the United States, valid driver’s license, and ability to lift 50+ pounds.
• Field experience with GNSS survey practices, hydrographic acquisition, and processing software.

Required skills

• Remote sensing, geodesy, underwater acoustics.
• Operation of survey vehicles, vessels, ROVs, and USVs.
• Hydrographic survey software: Hypack/Hysweep, SonarWiz, Soundtiles, Photoshop.
• CADD proficiency.
