Tax Technician (Trainee to Level 1) – New York State

About the role

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is seeking a Tax Technician to perform desk audits, compute tax liabilities, and provide professional communication with taxpayers. The position can start at the Trainee 1 level and advance to Tax Technician 1 based on experience and qualifications.

Key responsibilities

• Examine tax returns and related schedules for accuracy, calculate additional tax, interest, penalties, or refunds.
• Maintain case management, prepare work papers, fact sheets, and reports of findings.
• Research court decisions, rulings, and reference materials to support audit decisions.
• Communicate findings and correspondence professionally with taxpayers and their representatives.
• Participate in hearings or conferences as a departmental witness when required.

Required profile

• Full‑time accounting, auditing, or tax examination experience ranging from 2 to 4 years, depending on the level applied for.
• At least 60 semester credit hours, including six credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation.
• Ability to work under supervision, follow instructions, and collaborate with supervisors to resolve problems.
