Tax Counsel / Senior Tax Counsel

About the role

Chevron is hiring a Tax Counsel / Senior Tax Counsel in Houston, Texas, to provide tax planning advice and support on a wide range of U.S. state and local tax matters affecting its businesses. The role reports to a General Manager in Chevron's State Tax Legal group. Online applications are accepted until December 7, 2026.

Key responsibilities

• Provide tax planning advice and support for various Chevron businesses, with a primary focus on state and local taxation.
• Conduct in-depth tax research and analysis supporting the company's state and local tax positions.
• Advise management and stakeholders on the state and local tax implications of proposed business transactions and activities.
• Manage state and local tax controversies, including filing formal protests, representing the company in administrative hearings and negotiating settlements.
• Monitor state and local legislative and regulatory developments that affect Chevron's businesses.

Required profile

• Juris doctorate.
• Minimum of 10 years of U.S. state and local tax planning experience.
• Bar admission.
• Knowledge and experience with tax and commercial oil and gas operations, marketing and trading activities, and "new" energy sectors is desired.
• Knowledge and experience with tax accounting for direct and indirect taxes is desired.

• Ability to work collaboratively with peers and diverse stakeholder groups.

Preferred qualifications include an LL.M. or CPA. Relocation may be considered within Chevron's parameters; expatriate assignments and visa sponsorship are not considered.
