Tax Auditor – California Department of Tax & Fee Administration

About the role

The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) is seeking a Tax Auditor to join its Ventura Office. Under the supervision of a Supervising Tax Auditor, you will conduct field audits and investigate fraud or tax evasion cases, contributing to the fair collection of state revenue.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct low to moderately complex field audits and fraud/tax evasion investigations.
• Review taxpayer accounts, schedule audit appointments, and meet with taxpayers and their representatives.
• Explain audit findings, prepare audit reports and written correspondence.
• Identify interrelated fraud schemes and may testify in court regarding liabilities.
• Attend basic tax law and audit training classes to maintain knowledge.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in accounting, finance, or a related field preferred.
• Ability to work under close supervision of a Supervising Tax Auditor.
• Strong analytical and communication abilities.
• Willingness to work primarily in the Ventura Office with a hybrid schedule.
