Tax Accountant

About the role
The Tax Accountant will serve as the primary liaison between Moss and its external CPA firm, ensuring accurate preparation and filing of federal, state and local tax returns. This role supports the company’s compliance with complex construction‑related tax regulations and contributes to strategic tax planning.
Key responsibilities
- Coordinate with the external CPA firm to provide information, attend meetings, track progress, and review federal, state and local income tax returns.
- Prepare and file tax returns not handled by the CPA firm, including multi‑state sales and use tax returns on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
- Research and interpret sales and use tax laws across multiple states, including nexus determinations, exemption rules, and construction‑specific applications.
- Educate internal staff on state sales tax requirements and necessary documentation for vendors and owners.
- Advise management on tax implications of construction contracts, material purchases, equipment, and capital expenditures.
- Monitor changes in tax legislation and assess their impact on company operations.
- Maintain compliance with multi‑state tax nexus and reporting obligations.
- Assist with quarterly and annual tax forecasts, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Manage tax audits and respond to inquiries from tax authorities.
- Partner with the Controller and CFO on tax strategy, planning, and cash‑flow optimization.
- Ensure accurate record‑keeping of tax filings, payments, and supporting documentation.
- Support year‑end close and collaborate with external auditors and tax advisors as needed.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of federal tax law specific to the construction industry.
- Experience with sales and use tax compliance and state nexus rules.
- Ability to work independently and coordinate with external tax advisors.
Required skills
- Knowledge of federal, state and local income tax regulations.
- Expertise in multi‑state sales and use tax compliance.
- Familiarity with tax research and interpretation of nexus and exemption rules.
- Experience preparing tax forecasts, reconciliations and supporting schedules.
- Ability to manage tax audits and interact with tax authorities.
