Substitute ESOL Teacher for Adults

About the role

The YMCA International Learning Center in Boston seeks substitute teachers to deliver ESOL instruction to adult learners across beginner to advanced levels. Substitutes may teach in‑person, remotely, or in a hybrid format from September 2024 through June 2025.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver General English classes to a diverse adult audience, integrating language goals with employment skills.
• Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with Massachusetts ELPS standards, using Google Classroom and Zoom.
• Create a safe, inclusive environment that encourages language production and digital literacy.
• Collaborate with Education and Career Advisors to track student progress toward personal and career objectives.
• Maintain accurate attendance records, attend teacher meetings (for long‑term subs), and document weekly plans in Google Drive.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree (Education background preferred).
• TESOL/TEFL/TESL certification preferred.
• Eligibility to live and work in the United States.
• Sensitivity to socio‑economic and ethnic minority issues.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and classroom‑management abilities.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Proficiency with Google Suite (Docs, Classroom, Drive).
• Experience using Zoom for remote instruction.
• Comfort with web‑based file storage such as SharePoint.
