Staff Systems Engineer

About the role

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Staff Systems Engineer to join its R&D team in Milpitas, CA. The role focuses on the seamless integration, operation, and troubleshooting of complex utility subsystems that support cutting‑edge fusion research.

Key responsibilities

• Own critical subsystems such as vacuum pumps, chillers, and gas delivery modules, maintaining P&ID, FMEA, and equipment layouts.
• Lead hands‑on operation, diagnose, and resolve electromechanical and software issues during R&D cycles.
• Facilitate cross‑functional communication between Mechanical, Electrical, and Software teams to ensure system‑level cohesion.
• Author and maintain equipment specifications, system requirements, and engineering workflows using semiconductor standards.
• Create and manage detailed project schedules and budgets for equipment upgrades and installations.
• Report program progress and budget variances to senior stakeholders.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Systems, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
• 12+ years of experience designing, integrating, or operating complex R&D or semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
• Proven ability to manage hardware‑software interfaces in motor‑controlled, sensor‑heavy environments.

Required skills

• Vacuum pump, chiller, and gas delivery subsystem expertise.
• Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) and Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA).
• Electromechanical and software troubleshooting.
