Senior CAD Application Engineer

About the role

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Senior CAD Application Engineer to create tools and processes that leverage Siemens NX and Teamcenter data for mechanical design, analysis, and control‑system integration. The role blends strong mechanical design expertise with software development to support fusion‑energy hardware development.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver complete mechanical designs, including tolerance stacks, CTE/structural analysis, and assembly procedures.
• Develop CAD design and software workflows that convert parametric NX geometry into formats usable by engineering and control‑system analysis tools.
• Create Python‑based automation tools to interact with NX data via the NXOpen API.
• Integrate NX model parameters, coordinate systems, and geometry into existing scientific software tooling.
• Utilize NXOpen API for coordinate transformations and maintain a single source of truth for design data.
• Ensure CAD designs and documentation comply with ASME Y14.100 and Y14.5 standards.
• Participate in a matrix organization as a member of the CAD team, reporting to the CAD Team Leader.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary scientists and engineers to support functional teams.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or a STEM‑related field.
• 10+ years of industry experience, including engineering release workflows and PLM tools.
• 5+ years as a design engineer of mechanical, electro‑mechanical, or thermal‑mechanical systems.
• Proven ability to extract key data from Siemens NX and Teamcenter using software automation.
• Extensive experience with GD&T per ASME Y14.100/Y14.5.
• 10+ years applying Siemens NX and Teamcenter in a professional setting.
• Self‑motivated with strong problem‑solving skills.
• Programming experience in Python, NXOpen API, Linux, Git, and computational geometry.
