Staff Software Engineer - Internal Efficiency
lyrahealth · South San Francisco
Job description
About the role
Lyra Health, a provider of evidence-based mental health care, is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to embed AI into the daily workflows of internal teams, from engineering and operations to clinical support. The engineer sits with teams to understand how work is done, identifies high-leverage opportunities and builds, ships and iterates on AI-powered solutions in production, owning outcomes such as adoption and efficiency gains rather than just code. The role is hybrid from the South San Francisco, CA headquarters, or fully remote for candidates based in the United States.
Key responsibilities
- Embed with internal teams to map workflows, identify bottlenecks and scope AI-driven solutions with clear, measurable efficiency outcomes.
- Own the full lifecycle, from discovery and prototyping through deployment, adoption, measurement and iteration.
- Build and improve AI-powered tools, agents and automations that integrate with Python and Java-based microservices, web and mobile apps and third-party systems.
- Drive the integration of agentic software development across engineering and expand its adoption.
- Evaluate emerging AI tools, models and patterns, run fast experiments and turn winners into durable internal capabilities.
- Define and track metrics such as time saved, throughput, quality and cost, and share results with stakeholders and leadership.
- Work with data science, product management, design, security and operational and behavioral health teams, and follow best practices for quality and security, including responsible handling of sensitive data.
Required profile
- BS in CS or a related technical field.
- 8+ years of experience developing enterprise or consumer web applications, ideally with Python or Java/Spring.
- Demonstrated ability to work directly with non-engineering stakeholders, elicit requirements and drive adoption of what is built.
- Strong judgment about where AI genuinely helps versus where it adds risk or noise, especially in a healthcare context.
- Highly proactive and a self-starter who can decide what to build next.
Required skills
- Hands-on experience building with LLMs in production: agentic tools and frameworks, prompt and context engineering, evals and development workflows using Claude and Codex.
- Python and Java/Spring.
