Staff Software Engineer – Autonomy Capabilities (Space)

About the role

The Autonomy Capabilities Team builds software that automates single‑ and multi‑agent platforms across air, sea, and space domains. This staff‑level position focuses on creating autonomy capabilities for satellites and missile‑defense applications, blending advanced control theory with large‑scale optimization. It is ideal for engineers who enjoy solving complex, cross‑program problems and delivering solutions that move quickly from R&D to operational deployment.

Key responsibilities

• Develop multi‑objective optimization algorithms for large‑scale distributed decision‑making and task allocation in coordinated satellite missions.
• Design and implement weapons target assignment and motion‑planning solutions for fleets of space vehicles and interceptors.
• Advance low‑SWaP optimal control, tactical behavior management, and information‑aware planning.
• Produce high‑performance, well‑tested software modules ready for mid‑to‑high TRL insertion.
• Collaborate with perception, planning, simulation, hardware, and flight‑test teams to integrate autonomy on real platforms.
• Deploy capabilities to space vehicles, analyze mission logs, and validate system performance.
• Contribute to autonomy road‑maps through research, prototyping, and gap analysis.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, EE, Mechanical, Aerospace, or related field (PhD acceptable).
• Minimum 7 years of relevant experience (or equivalent with advanced degree).
• Proficiency in C++ and Python programming.
• Strong background in robotic technologies such as control systems, motion planning, optimization, or distributed decision‑making.
• Experience with unmanned system technologies, preferably in the space domain.
• Familiarity with simulation tools (e.g., AFSIM, NGTS) for testing and validation.
• Excellent problem‑solving, communication, and teamwork abilities.
• Ability to obtain a SECRET clearance or higher.
