Software Engineer II – Autonomy Behaviors

About the role

Shield AI is seeking a Software Engineer II to develop autonomy behaviors for unmanned platforms across air, land, sea, and space domains. The role blends advanced control theory, optimization, and software integration to deliver mission‑critical capabilities that are deployed on real‑world aircraft and simulation environments.

Key responsibilities

• Implement tactical autonomy features enabling complex missions such as coordination, target engagement, reconnaissance, and survivability.
• Develop, test, and debug software components throughout the full development lifecycle, including verification and validation.
• Collaborate with senior engineers to integrate autonomy code with sensor processing, communications, and actuation subsystems.
• Support integration and testing in both simulated and real‑world environments, traveling up to 20% as needed.
• Maintain clean, well‑tested code that follows established engineering standards.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
• 2–3 years of production‑level C++ development experience.
• Experience with software subsystem scheduling, behavior planning, motion planning, optimization, or flight controls.
• Eligibility to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.

Required skills

• Proficiency in C++ for production software.
• Use of version‑control systems (e.g., Git) and issue‑tracking tools.
• Experience with code review and release‑management processes.
• Familiarity with simulation environments and robotics frameworks such as ROS or OMPL.
• Ability to work within multi‑disciplinary teams on complex software integration.
