Staff Attorney – Public Records & Student Affairs

About the role

The University of Maryland, College Park seeks a Staff Attorney to join its Office of General Counsel. The attorney will provide legal counsel on public records matters under the Maryland Public Information Act and support a broad range of student affairs issues.

Key responsibilities

• Process, review, and respond to public records requests, including drafting correspondence and legal documents.
• Represent the University before the Public Information Compliance Board and in Public Information Ombuds mediations.
• Advise university clients on student records, privacy, housing, student organizations, minors on campus, public safety, and related legal matters.
• Conduct legal research, develop policy recommendations, and participate in grievance hearings and administrative proceedings.

Required profile

• Juris Doctor from an accredited U.S. law school.
• At least two years of progressively responsible legal experience.
• Admission to a state or DC Bar and eligibility for Maryland Bar admission within 12 months of hire.
• Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to multitask in a deadline‑driven environment.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Proficiency with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail, Calendar).
• Experience conducting legal research on federal, state, and administrative law.
