Paralegal supporting Financial Aid and General Counsel

About the role

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore seeks a full‑time, non‑exempt Paralegal to split duties between the Office of Student Financial Aid and the Office of the General Counsel. The role involves managing borrower defense cases, handling public information requests, and providing legal research and documentation support.

Key responsibilities

• Manage Borrower Defense cases: track Department of Education claims, deadlines, case status, and required submissions.
• Conduct detailed fact‑finding investigations and research institutional records while maintaining FERPA confidentiality.
• Analyze federal regulations, draft comprehensive responses, and maintain audit‑ready case files.
• Process Maryland Public Information Act requests, coordinate records searches, calculate fees, and prepare documents for production.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
• At least four years of professional legal experience.
• Excellent research, written and oral communication skills.

Required skills

• Legal research involving federal, state, and administrative statutes and case law.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
