Staff Accountant

About the role

CAP Northwest, the oldest and largest AIDS Service Organization in Oregon and Southwest Washington, is looking for a Staff Accountant with nonprofit accounting experience. The role keeps the general ledger accurate, helps close the books each month and prepares reconciliations and supporting schedules for audits and financial statements. It is based at the Davis Street office in Portland's Old Town, Monday to Friday 9:00am-5:00pm, with an optional hybrid option of at least three days in the office.

Key responsibilities

• Take part in month-end and year-end close, preparing entries and supporting schedules by deadline
• Maintain the general ledger and essential accounting records and files
• Prepare journal entries in the general ledger and subsidiary accounts in line with GAAP and CAP policy
• Maintain allocation schedules and record bank deposits
• Record accounts receivable transactions and prepare aging reports
• Record contribution transactions and reconcile them with the Development team's records
• Reconcile balance sheet accounts, including bank accounts, monthly
• Serve as backup for Accounts Payable and Payroll processes
• Assist Finance leadership with cash flow estimates and the annual budget

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field and two years of work experience, or five years as a full-cycle accountant
• Knowledge of GAAP and FASB accounting standards
• Experience preparing and analyzing financial statements
• Experience with nonprofit accounting, including net assets with and without donor restrictions, is preferred
• Follows internal controls and documents work so others can follow it

Required skills

• Accounting systems, including posting journal entries and reconciling GL and balance sheet accounts
• Intermediate Excel (pivot tables, lookup functions, SUMIF)
• Strong written and verbal communication and ability to manage multiple deadlines
