Sports Specialist – Fitness Instructor & Personal Trainer

About the role

This position is based in the Fitness, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Department at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base, New Orleans, LA. The Sports Specialist serves as a fitness instructor, personal trainer, and group‑exercise leader, supporting the Navy’s Physical Readiness Program and providing fitness services to active‑duty personnel.

Key responsibilities

• Design, supervise, and instruct a variety of group‑exercise classes (e.g., step, spin, water aerobics) for diverse participant sizes.
• Conduct comprehensive fitness testing, measuring aerobic capacity, body composition, muscular strength, flexibility, endurance, and blood pressure.
• Provide certified personal‑training services and guidance on safe, effective exercise techniques.
• Assist with the Command Fitness Leader (CFL) course and other fitness‑related military training.
• Maintain clean, safe fitness spaces; perform basic equipment maintenance and repairs.
• Develop and implement physical‑fitness programs in collaboration with command representatives.
• Prepare and analyze functional‑area reports and stay current with emerging fitness programming ideas.

Required profile

• Relevant experience or education in fitness, health, or related fields.
• Certification as a personal trainer or equivalent qualification.
• Ability to work with military personnel and understand Navy fitness standards.
• Strong knowledge of exercise programming, safety procedures, and equipment usage.
