Sports Instructor – Jiu‑Jitsu

About the role

The YMCA of Greater Boston is seeking a part‑time Sports Instructor to lead Jiu‑Jitsu and other sports classes for children and adults. Classes run weekday afternoons and weekend mornings, requiring strong communication with both participants and parents.

Key responsibilities

• Coach sports programs using provided curriculum and personal designs, emphasizing skill development, sportsmanship and YMCA core values.
• Maintain a safe playing environment, set up and clean up the play area, and keep accurate attendance records.
• Provide real‑time feedback, positive encouragement, and serve as a role model for expected behavior.
• Communicate with parents about successes, challenges, and class information in a professional manner.
• Attend meetings, trainings, events, and additional YMCA functions as needed.

Required profile

• One to two years of related experience as a sports coach or volunteer (preferred).
• CPR, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen, and Child Abuse Prevention Training (provided upon hire).
• Excellent relationship‑building and conflict‑resolution abilities.
• Energetic, motivated, well‑organized with a passion for children and sports.

Required skills

• Coaching skills with clear instruction, feedback and positive motivation.
• Detail‑oriented, strong organizational and planning abilities.
• Ability to manage small and large groups of children and/or adults.
