Job description
About the role
CACI is looking for a Space Radiation & Survivability Engineer to support the analysis, design and verification of spacecraft systems so they can survive the harsh radiation and space environments encountered throughout a mission. This is a mid-level technical position for an engineer with foundational experience who is ready to take on more ownership of radiation effects analysis and hardware survivability tasks. The role is based in Danbury, Connecticut, with up to 10% local travel.
Key responsibilities
- Define radiation environments (trapped protons/electrons, galactic cosmic rays, solar particle events) for different orbits and mission profiles
- Run total ionizing dose (TID), displacement damage dose (DDD) and single event effect (SEE) analyses for electronics and subsystems
- Support shielding analysis and mass trade studies to meet radiation tolerance requirements
- Work with parts engineering on radiation hardness assurance (RHA) of EEE parts and recommend mitigations
- Analyze survivability against charging/discharging, MMOD, thermal extremes and EMP/nuclear environments as applicable
- Build and maintain radiation analysis tools, models and simulations (e.g. FASTRAD, CREME96)
- Translate radiation requirements into design guidelines with systems, hardware and parts engineers
- Take part in design reviews (PDR, CDR) and prepare analysis documentation
- Support radiation qualification testing (TID, SEE, proton/heavy-ion testing at accelerators) and document methods and results
- Interface with customers and government agencies on radiation and survivability requirements
Required profile
- U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Physics or a related engineering field
- 3-5 years of experience in space radiation effects, survivability engineering or related space systems engineering
- Strong written and verbal communication and ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams
Required skills
- Working knowledge of TID, DDD and SEE effects on electronics
- Familiarity with radiation analysis and transport tools such as FASTRAD or CREME96
- Understanding of EEE radiation hardness assurance principles
- Desired: accelerator test campaign support, MIL-STD-883/750 or NASA standards, spacecraft charging analysis tools, proposal development and cost estimation
What we offer
- Proposed pay range of $94,400 - $198,200 depending on experience, skills and contract factors
