Software Engineer - Core Systems and Storage (C/C++)

About the role

NetApp is hiring experienced systems software engineers across several of its engineering organizations. The pipeline posting attracts C/C++ engineers who can contribute to core storage and data management technologies across ONTAP and other NetApp products. Candidates may be considered for teams such as ONTAP, WAFL, Replication/HA, Protocols (NFS/SMB/SAN/NVMe), Distributed Systems, Cloud Platforms and Performance Engineering. The posting covers levels 3, 4 and 5; team and level are decided during interviews.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and enhance features in ONTAP and related storage systems
• Write efficient, reliable and maintainable C/C++ code
• Analyze and improve code paths for performance, scalability and correctness
• Debug complex issues using system-level tools, logs, tracing and profiling
• Collaborate with filesystem, protocol, cloud, hardware and QA teams, and take part in design and code reviews
• Investigate performance bottlenecks and support prototyping and feasibility studies
• Use AI-assisted tools to speed up design, development, testing and troubleshooting

Required profile

• Level 3 (5-8 years): owns well-defined components, implements end-to-end functionality, ramps quickly on ONTAP, WAFL or protocols
• Level 4 (9-15 years): designs complex subsystems, mentors junior and mid-level engineers, leads deep-dive debugging
• Level 5 (12-16 years): leads major technical initiatives, defines long-term architecture, mentors senior engineers
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in CS, Computer Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

Required skills

• C/C++ for systems-level development
• Data structures, algorithms, memory management and concurrency
• Unix/Linux systems programming
• Filesystems, storage systems, networking stacks, distributed systems or high-availability architectures
• Debugging and performance analysis (gdb, perf, tracing, profiling)
• Nice to have: ONTAP/WAFL, NFS/SMB/SAN/NVMe, replication/clustering, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP, OCI), CI/CD and test automation

The target salary range is $120,000 - $280,000 OTE, depending on location, qualifications and experience.
