Shop Burner (Gantry Operator)

About the role

CB&I, a designer and builder of storage facilities, tanks and terminals, is hiring a Shop Burner (Gantry Operator) in Houston, Texas. The role operates the shop crane to lift, move and position materials and is an individual contributor reporting directly to the Supervisor. The standard schedule is four days a week (Monday to Thursday), 10 hours a day, with mandatory weekend overtime depending on production needs.

Key responsibilities

• Operate gantry cranes to lift, move and position metal components, fabricated parts, equipment and tools.
• Inspect crane equipment and lifting gear daily to ensure safe and efficient operation.
• Coordinate material movement with machine operators, welders, assemblers and other production staff.
• Complete the dimensional log for material burned and document material information for the QA report.
• Direct crane movements using hand signals or radio communication and ensure safe load handling.
• Perform routine maintenance checks and report malfunctions or safety issues promptly.
• Read shop drawings and flow work orders to determine material specifications and handling requirements.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA and company safety standards, and keep the work area clean and organized.
• Perform other duties as required.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Qualified to run a crane.
• Able to work in extreme heat conditions.

Required skills

• Clear penmanship and ability to hard stamp material using stencils.
• Accurate reading of a measuring tape and understanding of how to use a bevel gauge.
• Operating an overhead crane and a hand torch, choosing the right tip for different plate thicknesses.
• Setting up multiple torch bevels, grinding plate bevel edges to meet weld prep requirements, cutting scrap and cleaning up burning slag.
• Driving a forklift to move material.
