SHE Engineer – Ammonia Chillers

About the role

We are looking for a highly experienced Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) Engineer to lead technical safety oversight for ammonia chiller projects in the Raleigh‑Durham area. You will act as the client’s safety subject‑matter expert, ensuring compliance with state building codes, ANSI/IIAR standards and federal regulations throughout design, installation and commissioning.

Key responsibilities

• Verify machinery room designs meet NC Mechanical and Fire Codes, including fire‑rated separation and negative pressure requirements.
• Oversee installation of ammonia detection sensors, emergency ventilation, E‑Stop controls and ammonia‑compatible piping.
• Lead Mechanical Integrity walk‑downs and field inspections to confirm equipment matches P&IDs and design specifications.
• Develop and maintain the Process Safety Management (PSM) program, Risk Management Plan (RMP) and conduct Minimum System Safety Evaluations (MSSE) for IIAR 9 compliance.
• Coordinate permitting and agency liaison with local utilities, fire marshal, NCDEQ and the Raleigh‑Durham Fire Department.
• Establish and deliver all required EHS training, including HAZWOPER 24‑hour and Operator I/II courses.

Required profile

• Senior‑level experience in industrial safety engineering, preferably with ammonia refrigeration systems.
• Strong knowledge of North Carolina building codes, ANSI/IIAR standards and federal environmental regulations.
• Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary project teams and manage safety documentation throughout a project lifecycle.
