Senior UNIX System Engineer

About the role

Trace Systems is seeking a Senior UNIX Systems Engineer in Radford, Virginia, to support and maintain a growing mixed UNIX environment of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL) and Solaris systems. The associated project is currently in the proposal stage.

Key responsibilities

• Manage, maintain, deploy, troubleshoot and support the mixed UNIX environment
• Work with the existing UNIX team to keep enterprise servers available, stable and performant across customer environments
• Plan, coordinate and implement hardware and software deployments, upgrades, configurations and integrations
• Monitor, analyze and tune system performance, and identify issues early
• Implement and maintain hardening standards, security controls and configuration requirements
• Report on system security, operational health, capacity and utilization
• Develop and maintain technical documentation, SOPs and operational policies
• Support the lifecycle of datacenter hardware and vendor equipment, including firmware control and preventive maintenance
• Evaluate and implement new technologies and give recommendations for infrastructure improvements
• Communicate technical issues and progress with team members, customers and stakeholders

Required profile

• Active, in-scope US government Secret clearance; US citizenship required due to contract requirements
• Five or more years as a Unix Systems Administrator or IT Engineer, with automation experience
• Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent experience desired

Required skills

• Security+ certification
• Red Hat CE certification (can be waived for 30 days after joining)
• Patch management with YUM and RPM
• Network troubleshooting with VLANs, ifconfig, netstat, SSH and Telnet, and hardening with firewalld/iptables and hosts
• Command-line user management, SOPs, disaster recovery and service administration (DNS, SFTP, SMTP, NTP)
• Desired: SELinux, STIG/RMF/CORA patching, large-scale distributed site deployments
