Senior Staff Data Engineer

About the role

Join BILL’s Data Platform team to design, build, and operate the core data infrastructure that powers the company’s fintech products. You will work at the systems level, shaping architecture, standards, and self‑serve capabilities for a fast‑growing, remote‑first organization.

Key responsibilities

• Drive platform‑wide technical decisions, mentor engineers, and define architectural standards.
• Own end‑to‑end data lifecycle components, from ingestion and lake storage to real‑time serving, feature stores, query engines, knowledge graphs, and search.
• Lead large‑scale migrations, compute upgrades, and infrastructure modernisation projects.
• Partner with ML/AI, Risk, Payments, and Analytics teams to translate diverse data needs into durable platform solutions.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent experience.
• 8+ years in data engineering or distributed systems, with 5+ years focused on data platform teams.
• Proven technical leadership on ambiguous, high‑impact projects and ability to set cross‑team standards.

Required skills

• Event streaming platforms (Kafka, Flink, Spark Streaming or equivalents) and CDC ingestion patterns.
• Batch processing stacks (Airflow, dbt, Spark, Glue or equivalents).
• Modern data lake formats (Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake) and lake architectures.
• Data access layers (Trino/Starburst, Presto, feature stores, vector stores, graph databases such as Neo4j).
• Expert‑level SQL and strong Python programming, with solid CI/CD, testing, and observability practices.
