Senior Software Engineer (Navy Weapons Systems R&D)

About the role

Amentum is seeking a Senior Software Engineer based in Houston, TX, to support the U.S. Navy's launch test facilities Research and Development program, which tests U.S. Navy submarine and surface ship weapons systems. The engineer develops, maintains and enhances complex software systems, tests them against design requirements, resolves reported problems and works closely with system engineers and users.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and enhance software systems based on documented requirements, and debug and correct defects
• Test software components, document test results and write or review software and system documentation
• Design and code new software or modify existing software, including integrating it into new systems or operating environments
• Analyze requirements to derive design and performance requirements, and analyze system flow, data usage and work processes
• Confer with users or system engineers, investigate problem areas and make recommendations to improve documentation and development standards
• Develop or implement algorithms and simple data queries, and design or implement database interfaces and queries
• Assist with software strategies, requirements, test procedures and hardware/software trade-offs, including use of COTS software

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution
• Minimum 10 years of software programming experience in complex engineering environments
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required
• Preferred: Master's degree, familiarity with U.S. Navy weapons system software, and experience with Interface Control Documents and software requirements documents

Required skills

• Software programming experience with FactoryTalk, LabVIEW and Studio 5000
• Programming of PLCs, data acquisition systems and control systems
• Time synchronization across different interfaces
• Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Travel is expected about 33% of working time, with periodic field presence during installation, testing and commissioning. The position is contingent upon contract award.
