Senior Roadway Engineer & Detroit Metro Transportation Lead

About the role

The Mannik & Smith Group (MSG) is expanding its Transportation Team in Michigan and seeks a Senior Roadway Engineer who will also serve as the Detroit Metro Transportation Lead. This senior position combines hands‑on technical work with leadership of a seven‑designer team, delivering high‑quality roadway and utility projects in a fully 3D digital environment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead preparation of roadway design plans and 3D models for local agency projects.
• Perform and review design calculations to ensure accuracy and compliance.
• Prepare design packages for milestone client submittals, including estimates, special provisions, and RID packages.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff, fostering a collaborative, high‑performing team.
• Support MDOT projects as needed, applying expertise and leadership.
• Oversee and manage a team of seven designers, ensuring successful project delivery and professional development.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
• 12‑15 years of experience working with MDOT transportation and local agencies.
• Michigan Professional Engineer (PE) license, or ability to obtain registration in other states.
• Experience as a project manager with a desire and ability to manage a team.

Required skills

• Proficiency with OpenRoads ORD design software (required).
• Knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil3D (plus).
• Strong project‑management capabilities.
• Roadway design calculations and 3D modeling expertise.
