Senior Principal Forward Deployed Engineer (AI/ML)

About the role

Atlassian is hiring a Senior Principal Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) in San Francisco, working remotely. The FDE team works directly with customers and cross-functional teams to deliver AI-powered solutions, partnering with organizations across industries to help them use Atlassian's AI capabilities. It is a high-visibility, high-impact role for people who thrive in fast-paced, ambiguous environments.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute code across the entire Atlassian product suite, giving broad engineering exposure.
• Lead the design, development and deployment of AI/ML-powered solutions using Rovo tailored to customer needs.
• Architect and implement application integrations using Python, JavaScript or similar languages, focusing on APIs, microservices and enterprise-scale systems.
• Influence product direction by working with customers and removing the final barriers they face.
• Champion AI-augmented workflow automation in customer environments.
• Oversee end-to-end production deployment of AI solutions, with continuous evaluation, monitoring and improvement.
• Navigate risk and compliance requirements, including AI risk assessment, data privacy (GDPR) and regulatory frameworks.
• Mentor Senior FDEs and engineers, and communicate complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Align technical solutions with business objectives.

Required profile

• 15+ years of backend software development experience, with at least 5 years in a principal/staff-level role.
• 5+ years delivering AI/ML solutions in production, including as a founding or forward-deployed engineer in 0-to-1 products.
• Demonstrated ability to solve complex, ambiguous problems and influence cross-functional teams without formal authority.
• Experience with AI risk assessment, data privacy and compliance (e.g. GDPR).
• Preferred: experience with Atlassian Intelligence or Rovo AI, regulated industries, mentoring or leading engineering teams.

Required skills

• Deep expertise in applied AI/ML, including generative AI, LLMs and agent-based frameworks.
• Proficiency in Python, JavaScript or similar languages, with APIs, microservices and enterprise integration.

What we offer

• Base pay for new hires depending on location: Zone A $243,900-$318,425, Zone B $219,510-$286,583, Zone C $202,437-$264,293.
