Senior Laboratory Services Technician

About the role

The Senior Laboratory Services Technician supports the Histology and Pathology sections of the Biomedical Sciences Department, ensuring high‑quality specimen processing, staining, and autopsy support for veterinary education and research.

Key responsibilities

• Retrieve, ink, trim, embed, and section tissue specimens from the veterinary clinic, research labs, and post‑mortem facilities.
• Perform routine H&E staining, special stains, and prepare paraffin scrolls for PCR.
• Conduct microscopic quality‑control checks and deliver stained slides to pathologists.
• Assist with autopsy class organization, specimen preparation, digital photography, and biohazard waste disposal.
• Manage laboratory inventory using SIMMS software, create purchase orders, and support annual budgeting.
• Develop and revise SOPs, maintain MSDS, and prepare reagents according to established protocols.
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including microtomes and cold storage units.
• Enter and manage case data in the LIMS VADDS system, including test ordering and invoicing.

Required profile

• Relevant experience in histology, pathology, or veterinary laboratory services.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate with pathologists, researchers, and students.
• Strong organizational skills for inventory, documentation, and budgeting tasks.

Required skills

• Microtome operation and tissue sectioning.
• Histology staining techniques (H&E and special stains).
• Use of LIMS (VADDS) for case management.
• SIMMS software for inventory control.
• Preparation of reagents and solutions following SOPs.
• Biohazard waste handling and disposal.
