Senior Health Actuary Consultant

About the role

Mercer's Health Actuarial and Financial Consulting team is looking for a Senior Health Actuary Consultant in Boston. The role leads client engagements on employers' health benefits strategies, including financial projections, plan design optimization and renewal negotiations, and acts as a primary financial contact for clients while directing analysts and associates. It is a hybrid position with at least three days a week in the office.

Key responsibilities

• Lead routine client engagements, managing service delivery, strategy, financial evaluations, plan design, renewals, business placement, benchmarking and other underwriting projects for health and welfare insurance.
• Review data analyses produced by junior staff to ensure actuarial soundness and support their development.
• Perform and review complex analyses and cost projections using Excel, SAS and other software, with possible specialization in healthcare-related insurance.
• Draft and review client reports and presentations summarizing findings and recommending strategies or solutions.

Required profile

• BA/BS degree in actuarial science, math, statistics, finance, economics or a related field.
• At least 4 years of actuarial experience, including health and benefits consulting.
• Progress toward the ASA designation.
• Client-facing experience and strong analytical skills.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Required skills

• Health benefits actuarial consulting experience is a plus.
• Strong programming in R and Python, including reusable code for data manipulation, actuarial or financial modeling and process automation, is a plus.
• ASA credential is a plus.
