Senior Electro-Optical Engineer

About the role

Applied Physics is looking for a Senior Electro-Optical Engineer to lead the development, design and testing of optical systems for space-based applications. The engineer acts as Certified Principal Engineer (CPE) for a small optical engineering team, building and testing prototype or high TRL optical sensor hardware.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a small optical engineering team as CPE for the build and test of prototype or high TRL optical sensor hardware
• Perform optical analysis to check whether designed systems meet specifications
• Work with Systems Engineering on system-level design and decomposition into optical requirements
• Take part in studies and system trades for enhanced capabilities
• Lead development of materials for program technical reviews and present data through product development and maturation
• Procure optical components to specification and lead development of build documents, hardware assembly, integration, test planning and test execution
• Report progress to program leadership and external customers, support spacecraft integration and coordinate across disciplines
• Participate in failure investigations and anomaly resolution boards, and work with CPEs, RSEs, designers and test engineers
• Deliver concise technical presentations and briefings to peers, leadership and customers

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics or a related field, or equivalent education and experience
• 5+ years of professional experience, or a Master's degree with 3+ years, or a related PhD
• Experience fabricating, designing or fielding tactical or space-based optical systems and their performance parameters
• Experience integrating, testing, characterizing and/or verifying optical systems
• Active Top Secret security clearance or equivalent
