Job description
About the role
The Senior Design Engineer I works in the Outdoor Engineering organization and is responsible for hands-on mechanical design of moderate to high-complexity outdoor power equipment (OPE) systems and subsystems. The role owns detailed design from concept to production, with a focus on robust design, manufacturability, validation and cost, and acts as a technical leader and subject-matter expert for assigned components and assemblies.
Key responsibilities
- Own end-to-end mechanical design of components, sub-assemblies or systems, from concept and layout through detailed CAD to validation and production release.
- Maintain 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, GD&T, tolerance stacks and specifications, and perform design trade-off analyses.
- Design for manufacturing, cost and quality, partnering with sourcing and suppliers on tooling and cost drivers, and support value engineering.
- Ensure designs meet internal standards and regulatory requirements (UL / ANSI / CSA / ISO).
- Define DFMEA inputs and design risks, run verification plans (tolerance validation, stress analysis, durability, environmental and abuse testing), and approve engineering changes and deviations.
- Work with Product Management, Manufacturing, Quality, Compliance and Reliability teams, and communicate clearly with global engineering and supplier teams.
Required profile
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of design experience in consumer, industrial or electromechanical products.
- Demonstrated experience with materials, manufacturing processes, tooling and supplier-built components.
- Experience leading design verification and validation with data-driven methods.
- Preferred: outdoor power equipment, power tools or small engines experience, pilot build support, familiarity with Asia-based manufacturing, and UL / CSA / ANSI compliance work.
Required skills
- Strong 3D CAD (Creo / SolidWorks / NX or equivalent), detailed drawings and GD&T.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and technical communication skills.
Occasional travel (about 3-10%) to suppliers, manufacturing sites or test facilities.
