Senior Data Engineer (San Francisco)

About the role

Airwallex, the AI-native financial operating system used by more than 675,000 businesses, is hiring a Senior Data Engineer for its Strategic Data team. The team builds the data foundations supporting business intelligence, machine learning and operational decision-making. The role is based in San Francisco or Seattle, with three days a week spent in the office.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement robust, scalable data models, choosing between star, snowflake, normalized and denormalized schemas depending on the use case.
• Partner with business teams to turn data needs into clean, documented models and promote a single source of truth across data layers and pipelines.
• Build and maintain batch and streaming ETL pipelines, from ingestion and transformation to delivery.
• Maintain data consistency, traceability and quality across multiple sources, including distributed or multi-datacenter environments.
• Contribute to data governance strategies covering quality, stewardship, metadata, master data, privacy, security and lifecycle management.
• Work with Data Platform Engineers and Product Managers to find root causes of data issues, and explore how data engineering and AI can work together.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Systems, Finance, Mathematics or a related field.
• Five or more years of experience designing and implementing ETL pipelines with tools such as Informatica, Talend, Apache NiFi or similar platforms.
• Strong experience with data modeling, schemas, ETL and end-to-end data workflows.
• Preferred: experience in financial services, payments or fintech; knowledge of data governance and financial regulations; scripting with Python or R; distributed or multi-datacenter systems; data management certification.

Required skills

• SQL and databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL or Oracle.
• Data warehousing solutions.
• Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform, especially BigQuery and Airflow.
• Strong communication and collaboration with globally distributed teams.
