Design Engineer - Waypoint Design System

About the role

Cohere, a security-first enterprise AI company, is looking for a Design Engineer to build and maintain Waypoint, its design system, across both the Figma library and the production codebase. The role is not a designer who codes a little or an engineer who dabbles in Figma: you must be fluent on both sides, defining a component's behavior and states in Figma and shipping it to npm the next day. You will own the Figma side of the library (structure, variants, tokens, documentation) and contribute to the core system, including component packages, the token pipeline and the tooling that keeps design and code in sync.

Key responsibilities

• Own and evolve the Figma library for Waypoint: component structure, variants, properties and documentation.
• Build and maintain core Waypoint components and contribute to the component packages.
• Keep design tokens in Figma and their code representations (CSS custom properties, Tailwind config) tightly synced.
• Partner with product designers to turn new patterns into system components and with engineers to ensure they are easy to adopt.
• Help define workflows and tooling connecting Figma and code (sync scripts, plugins, documentation sites).
• Write clear documentation and usage guidance.
• Weigh in on architecture decisions such as adding new components versus extending existing ones, and on how the system serves AI models as well as designers and engineers.

Nice-to-have qualifications

• Experience building or contributing to design-to-code sync tooling (Figma plugins, token pipelines, MCP-based workflows).
• Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG) and how to bake them into components.
• Experience packaging and versioning component libraries (npm scoped packages, semver, changelogs).
• Exposure to multi-platform design systems (iOS/SwiftUI, Android/Jetpack Compose, Style Dictionary).
• Experience in an AI-native product environment or interest in how AI changes design systems.
