Forward Deployed Engineer

About the role

Column is a bank and software company that provides a single, technology-forward banking stack to fintechs and developers, removing the complex layers of vendors and middleware that sit between them and the banks. It is hiring its first Forward Deployed Engineer, a hands-on engineering role based in the Presidio office in San Francisco with frequent travel to customer sites in the US and abroad. The engineer works with customers to understand their problems and helps them build new products on Column's APIs, turning field insights into platform improvements. The role reports directly to the CEO.

Key responsibilities

• Work directly with partner engineering teams to design, build and launch products with Column's banking stack.
• Act as technical owner for strategic customers from onboarding to launch, unblocking them on architecture, ledgering, reconciliation and edge cases in money movement.
• Write production-quality code that speeds up integrations and grows into reusable product.
• Turn patterns from the field into product and platform improvements, working with engineering to shape APIs, documentation and developer experience.
• Advise customers on how to build safe, compliant and resilient financial products in a regulated environment.
• Represent Column in conversations with customer executives and engineering leaders, and build trusted, long-term relationships.

Required profile

• Strong engineering fundamentals, ideally with experience in backend systems, APIs or infrastructure.
• Product thinking: seeing past the immediate ask to the underlying problem and the best solution.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to explain complex systems clearly to engineers or executives.
• Executive presence and the confidence to lead high-stakes customer conversations.
• Project management skills to run several customer engagements at once.
• A self-starter who is comfortable with ambiguity and building processes from scratch.
• Experience with payments, banking or financial infrastructure is a plus; fluency in Spanish, French or Russian is ideal.
