About the role
The AFL‑CIO Technology Institute seeks a Senior Counsel/Advisor to lead research and policy work on collective bargaining for emerging technologies. This full‑time position will help workers navigate AI and automation across industries, public services, and workplaces.
Key responsibilities
- Direct the Institute’s collective bargaining initiatives related to AI and emerging tech, in coordination with senior staff.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of bargaining trends across sectors and develop educational resources and model contract language.
- Build and sustain relationships with researchers, labor federations, AFL‑CIO affiliates, and external partners.
- Develop and advance policy positions on AI, automation, and labor law; produce analysis, testimony, regulatory comments, and reports.
- Advise union leaders, advocacy groups, philanthropic partners, and policymakers.
- Serve as internal management representative in technology‑related bargaining and grievance resolution.
- Assist in drafting contract language with the Institute’s staff union and prepare reports as directed.
Required profile
- Juris Doctorate or equivalent legal experience.
- At least five years of labor law or labor policy experience.
- Demonstrated involvement with the labor movement.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills for independent policy drafting.
- Proven ability to manage multiple high‑priority projects and meet deadlines.
- Commitment to labor movement principles, social and economic justice, and racial equity.
Required skills
- Strong legal research and writing abilities.
- Experience managing complex internal and external relationships.
- Knowledge of collective bargaining processes and contract administration.
