Security Officer

About the role

The Security Officer supports a safe environment for patients, visitors, caregivers and staff at Akron General Medical Center. The position works PRN with variable shifts and provides opportunities for professional growth through mentorship with Police Officers.

Key responsibilities

• Perform proactive monitoring and timely response to potential or actual security threats.
• Patrol hospital property, including interior areas, parking lots and decks, to deter vandalism, theft and property abuse.
• Provide escorts and eliminate safety hazards for patients, visitors and caregivers.
• Enforce facility policies such as parking, visitation, drug, and tobacco‑free regulations.
• Maintain knowledge of alarm systems and emergency/disaster preparedness plans; facilitate drills and simulations.
• Complete mandatory training, including de‑escalation, taser certification and other department‑specific competencies.
• Assist caregivers and visitors with safety information and support.
• Conduct Emergency Department metal‑detector searches of patients and belongings, documenting results to dispatch.

Required profile

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Valid Ohio Driver’s License and eligible insurance.
• At least one year of experience in criminal justice, private/public/military security, or related law‑enforcement fields, or Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy certification.
• Physical ability to walk, stand for long periods, chase, apprehend and subdue suspects, and pass annual vision and hearing tests.

Required skills

• Operation of metal‑detector equipment and hand‑held scanning devices.
• De‑escalation techniques and basic use of taser equipment.
