Lifeguard I – Part‑Time

About the role

Under the Aquatics Director, the Lifeguard I ensures the safety of all pool patrons, enforces pool rules, and implements emergency protocols at the Waltham YMCA.

Key responsibilities

• Continuously scan the pool to prevent emergencies and respond immediately to incidents.
• Activate the branch and pool Emergency Action Plan (EAP) when needed.
• Perform rescues, provide CPR, First Aid, and emergency oxygen.
• Complete incident reports promptly and enforce pool rules.
• Maintain a clean, safe pool environment and assist with pool cleaning and testing when off‑duty.
• Communicate consistently with supervisors and participate in safety drills and trainings.
• Arrive 10 minutes before shift, secure doors when unattended, and manage coverage for schedule changes.

Required profile

• At least 16 years of age.
• Physically able to scan the pool, stand or sit for extended periods, and lift up to 50 lb.
• Comfortable working in moderate to high noise levels and flexible to early mornings, nights, and weekends.

Required skills

• Professional Lifeguard certification (including Disappearing Dummies).
• CPR, First Aid, and O₂ certification.
• YMCA Lifeguarding certification.
• Child Abuse Prevention training (first four weeks).
• Respect in the Workplace (Sexual Harassment Prevention) training.
