Hospital Safety Officer

About the role

The Hospital Safety Officer provides continuous visibility and safety oversight for patients, visitors, and staff at Akron General Medical Center. Working the evening shift, the officer helps maintain a secure environment and responds to safety incidents.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct regular rounding and visibility checks in assigned areas to promote safety perception.
• Identify patients at risk and issue clinical and security notifications.
• Respond to escalating incidents, eliminate hazards, and de‑escalate aggressive behavior using the least restrictive methods.
• Screen all patients and visitors with magnetometer or wand devices.
• Assist with safety searches and inventory of belongings during new admissions.

Required profile

• High School Diploma or GED.
• At least two years of experience in a behavioral health, corrections, healthcare, or customer‑service setting.
• Ability to work evenings, rotating weekends and holidays.

Required skills

• Completion of private police training approved by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission with security certification.
• Proficiency in using magnetometer or wand screening equipment.
• Use of personal protective equipment and adherence to standard precautions.
