Scrap Buyer II

About the role

The Scrap Buyer II is responsible for procuring retail scrap for steelmaking in an economical and efficient manner. Reporting to the Regional Raw Materials Manager, the role involves building and maintaining supplier relationships, traveling weekly to source scrap, and ensuring compliance with company policies.

Key responsibilities

• Recruit new supply sources and maintain relationships with existing scrap suppliers across the region.
• Procure scrap metals according to purchase contracts, monitor market trends, and negotiate pricing.
• Coordinate with transportation, yard personnel, inspection, and accounting teams to ensure timely receipt and accurate invoicing.
• Resolve grading, weight, and order discrepancies with vendors while maintaining strong relationships.
• Provide cost‑avoidance and savings data to management and transportation departments.

Required profile

• 2‑3 years of relevant experience, including at least 1 year directly buying and selling scrap.
• Strong negotiating, communication, math, and problem‑solving abilities.
• Self‑starter attitude with the ability to work independently and within cross‑functional teams.
• High ethical standards, strong work ethic, and willingness to travel weekly.

Required skills

• Knowledge of raw material sources, grades, and transportation issues.
• Familiarity with scrap yard operations and commercial procurement processes.
• Proficiency in computer procurement systems and related business applications.
