Retail Management Intern - NW Chicago (Summer 2027)

About the role

Meijer offers an 11-week Store Leadership Internship for students currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program who want a career in retail store leadership. The program builds retail knowledge and exposes participants to store leadership opportunities, with the first half focused on learning and the second half in an official Intern Team Leader role covering business results, team engagement and customer experience. It requires a flexible schedule, including some nights and/or weekends.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, direct and supervise team members in day-to-day operations across store departments, acting as mentor and coach
• Support departments in achieving sales, maintaining shrink and managing the P&L
• Deliver courteous, friendly and efficient service to customers and team members
• Mentor and coach team members so that customer service and sales goals are exceeded and store standards are met
• Onboard new team members and help them complete required training
• Spend most of the time in the store communicating with customers and team members
• Promote a safe work environment and perform other duties as assigned

Required profile

• Student currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program
• Ability to work flexible shifts to cover the full operation of the store
• Past leadership responsibilities in work or extracurricular activities strongly preferred
• Prior retail experience preferred but not required
• Reliable and consistent attendance required

Required skills

• Ability to analyze financial information and other data to make informed decisions
• Effective communication and relationship-building with customers, team members and leadership
• Action oriented, able to manage multiple tasks
